New Show - Inner Chef

Discovery Home Channel will begin premiering a new show named Inner Chef this Saturday. The show is hosted by Marcus Samuelsson, chef and owner of Aquavit in New York. You may also remember Marcus as a challenger on the ill fated Iron Chef USA that aired two episodes on UPN.

Food TV, New Three

Food Network aired three new shows last week: Behind the Bash, Sugar Rush, and Restaurant Makeover.

Behind the Bash is Giada DeLaurentiis' second show on the network (watch out Rachel Ray!). She returns to her catering roots, but takes it to the extreme by covering mega parties like the grammys. I found this to be the second most interstice of the three shows, because I usually have issues turning out good constant food when I cook for more that 8 or so people.

Sugar Rush introduces a new face to us: Warren "not to be confused with Alton" Brown. Warren, owner of Cake Love, a DC area bakery, explores the country picking up tips and techniques from other bakery's, as well as prepares a dessert during the course of the show. This show I found to be the least interesting of the three, but it does show some promise. For more information on Warren Brown - check out the Recipe For Success episode named Cake Love.

Restaurant Makeover was by far the most interesting of all the shows. (I can't wait to see the next episode, but I am a little worried that it's entertainment value will be lost after a few episodes.) A designer and chef help out a struggling Restaurant by cleaning, redesigning and teaching the kitchen staff new menu items. I thought the menu creation process was interesting, as well as the chefs raw personality.

All in all I'd say that Food Network has done a good job with the new shows, and my TiVo now has three more things to look after.

Soup Nazi Returns

The original SoupMan is set to open November 2nd in midtown Manhattan. Created by chef Al Yeganeh, famous for the "Soup Nazi" character based off of him in the hit comedy Seinfeld, the restaurant is expected to have a large turn out opening day. Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto - who once worked as sushi chef at the famous Nobu New York, will be opening a new casual dining concept named Pauli Moto. The restaurant is slated to open this month in Virginia. Moriomoto will helm the menu's wheel, with help from father and son restaurateurs Paul Ardaji Sr and Jr. The restaurant will also serve Morimoto's own line of beer and sake.

This is great news, seeing Moriomoto's restaurant count catch up with his fellow Iron Chefs, plus there are plans to open an additional nine units by 2007.

More Outback

Outback has announced a new seafood concept: Blue Coral Seafood & Wine Bar. The concept was birthed by Paul Flemming, who has also devised Flemings and Paul Lee's Chinese Kitchen for Outback as well as P.F. Changs. (He is the PF.)

This is not Outbacks first attempt at seafood, they currently operate Roy's, a Hawaiian themed restaurant named after Chef Roy Yamaguchi, as well as Bonefish Grill.

Outback sees Bonefish Grill as the seafood counterpart to Outback Steakhouse, and Blue Coral would be the seafood counterpart to the more upscale Flemings.

Blue Coral might be debuted in Newport Beach, California.

ICA Season 3!

As announced in a press release from DC Film and TV, Ris Lacoste of 1789, Morou of Signatures and Cesare Lanfranconi of Ristorante Tosca are all competeing in a priliminary for a challenger spot on Iron Chef America. NBC news reports the secret ingredient for the competition was pumkin, and Chef Morou won with an offering of pumpkin and lobster tea with pumpkin beignet. He also presented pumpkin sour cream with caviar.

Morou will go to New York to battle one of the Iron Chefs in January, with that show being aired on Food Network sometime in 2006.

It's good to hear that Food Network is continuing to record new battles - hopefully we will be able to watch old ones soon - Food Network, please release the Season 1 DVDs!

Fancy Boston Market

Boston Market, which I was surprised to find out is owned by McDonalds, is testing a new restaurant in Illinois. The new concept has only 17 seats, focusing on premium to-go foods and upscale retail items. These items include wine, flowers, salsas, jams, "all natural" chicken, pork loin, sirloin and rotisserie-cooked turkey breast. There are also new side items ranging from quinoa salad and grilled asparagus to wild rice salad and cherry tomatoes with fresh mozzarella.

Sounds like this could do well.

McDonalds will continue its Destiny’s Child loving food line in 2006 they announced today. Be on the lookout for more chicken, breakfast and salads from the giant, including an Asian salad with low fat sesame ginger dressing, a breakfast burrito and a spicy chicken sandwich. McDonalds has also announced it does not plan to bring it’s “Oven Selects” deli sandwiches into the mainstream. Oven Selects can currently be had in one of 400 American McDonalds (test market) as well as in McDonalds in Canada, Australia and the UK.

JBX Grills – an eleven chain experiment by Jack in The Box, is being nixed. JBX Grills featured a trendy café type atmosphere with a menu ranging from Jack In The Box burgers to deli style sandwiches. Jack In The Box claims that the recent surge in gas prices, as well as poor sales of the “Ultimate Club sandwich” has led to JBX Grills demise.

In other Jack In The Box news, they will be aggressively fighting for a piece of the “Mexican Explosion”. The company will be aggressively growing their 230 unit Qdoba Mexican Grill, in to the market of other Mexican quick/casual brands such as Chipotle, Moes, Baja Burrito Kitchen and of course, Taco Bell.

Anne Burrell - you've seen her on Iron Chef America as Mario Batali's short blonde haired sous chef - will be opening her own place: European Union. It is billing itself as part pub, part trattoria, and part café. It is designed by AvroKO and owned by Bob Giraldi and Jason Hennings (who also owns Diablo Royale). Located in New York's East Village, the 2,000-square-foot, 97-seat space is inspired by London “gastropubs”and features European fusion menu. European Union is schedule to open in late October 2005.
